Cereal Products Packaging

Barrier Plus Wrap
Eating away from home is a significant part of our culture.  For cereal manufacturers, this means a cost effective single serve cup capable of fitting in car holders, being microwaved, and being eaten on the run.  Quality graphics and appetite appeal are also critical to getting the product noticed on the shelf and purchase.  For this market, PMC developed the OW-800 - a machine that wraps paperboard sleeves around plastic, foam, or paperboard cups.  The sleeve is sealed with hot melt or cold adhesive or it can be heat sealed to the base cup.

Barrier One™ containers can have excellent thermal transfer properties and ease of handling after microwaving.  Speeds on the OW-800 range up to 155 cpm.

Straight Wall, Round Canisters There are speed advantages to using round containers.  PMC offers two commercial solutions: 1) a paperboard bottom applied to spiral wound tubes; 2) two-piece convolute canisters formed in-line with the filler.  The PEM-400 (Paper End Machine) applies paperboard ends to spiral tubes with either hot melt or hot air heat sealing.  The PEM machine applies paperboard ends up to 185 cpm.  And for those companies interested in in-line forming, PMC provides the PMC-1250 or PMC-1300 models, depending on package size requirements.  Maximum speeds are 120 cpm.

The Big Easy
The PMC-1300NR machine was developed with the cereal market in mind.  Consumers have long listed the traditional “bag ‘n box” as ineffective in meeting consumer needs.  The PMC-1300NR accommodates the needs of this market to exceed ten inches in height.  The Big Easy has four times greater compression strength than the folding carton.  So, in shipping, corrugated trays with shrink wrap can now replace corrugated container costs.  That economic gain can now be incorporated into consumer-convenient features of the primary package.  The PMC-1300NR runs up to 120 cpm.  Barrier requirement can be achieved with either paperboard or PMC’s new Barrier Plus™ polypropylene sheet forming system.
