Paper Machinery Corporation Helps Customers Contain Costs

New packaging solutions handle economic realities

Milwaukee, WI, November 7, 2008 – New packaging options from Paper Machinery Corporation have helped frozen dessert producers control costs in 2008. Already reeling from significant increases in product ingredient and transportation costs during 2007, the frozen dessert industry faced two choices this year: maintain package size and raise the price, or keep the price the same and decrease package size.

A large segment of the market elected to change the package to a 48 oz. size—and this just two years after the industry moved from 64 oz. to 56 oz. containers. Tools from Milwaukee, Wis.-based Paper Machinery Corporation helped customers make a smooth transition to a smaller package size. As a result, major converters like Huhtamaki, Burd & Fletcher, Stanpac and Double H were each able to offer their own distinctive formed containers in a highly competitive market.

Paper Machinery Corporation also manufactured new machinery to meet market needs. Originally developed to form non-round ice cream containers the PMC 1300NR has an additional heat station and a rimming station that are not available on the widely-used PMC 1500NR. This new capability broadens the range of material quality that can be formed and allows an increase in container forming speed.

Smaller non-round containers can be formed on the PMC 1250NR machine. Nestle and Unilever utilize it for novelty containers, principally their Dibs and Poppers brands, respectively.

The frozen food industry has a significant production issue due to the wide variety of flavors produced. Paper Machinery Corporation addresses this issue with "diverter" technology. This is a mechanism added to the PMC 1002 and PMC 1300 models to read the UPC codes of blanks moving through the machines, and then discharge those that are incorrect. Diverter-equipped machines address product mixing, and do so without stopping the machines. The diverter can also be activated for periodic checks of package quality.

Whether responding to economic realities or seeking a competitive advantage, customers can rely on Paper Machinery Corporation for increased packaging options in the frozen dessert category.
