Chinese take-out container
becomes mainstream package

When is a cup a container? When you remove the rim curl and add flaps for easy closure. With that difference, the Chinese take-out container has become a unique, versatile package, and the world is taking notice.

The traditional Chinese take-out container was a folding carton. Paper Machinery Corporation improved it by combining the advantages of a convolute canister and a folding carton. The new design is more stable, de-nests better, and larger sizes can be formed faster, among other attractive benefits.

Chinese or other take-out is just one of many uses, as the container is also an effective package for a variety of food products such as snacks, candy or cookies. And unlike canisters with a rolled rim and costly overcap, the folded flaps of the take-out save considerable money and still provide for re-closure.

The package concept—round bottom, square or rectangular top—offers a merchandising edge as well. The non-round top requires that stores display the face panel forward on the shelf, assuring that brand identification is always visible. The vibrant graphics that can only be produced with a pre-printed paperboard blank further add to the container's sales appeal.

The marketplace has now awakened to the possibilities of the PMC-formed Chinese take-out container. In Belarus, this package is used for quality chocolates by Spartak®. In the United States, Harry & David has recently upgraded candy gift packaging from flexible wraps.

How is this unique container formed? It is run on the PMC 1250, modified to bypass the third turret of the canister forming process. The machine can be ordered without the third turret or it can be bypassed on an existing cup or canister forming machine. Either way, the PMC 1250 efficiently forms the Chinese take-out at speeds up to 165 cpm, nesting them in logs of a defined count.

Whether preserving shrimp fried rice or packaging fine candies, the PMC take-out is a new take on a traditional container. And one more example of the global possibilities when you work with PMC to think outside the cup.
