Unique Solution
Non-round paperboard container provides sustainable package solution

What's good for the planet is now good for ice cream, and all who savor its flavors in Europe. Traditionally, Europeans have preferred a two-carton approach to packaging ice cream: a non-round plastic container to hold and preserve the product, and in-mold labels, shrink sleeves or paperboard trays or sleeves to convey brand identity and appetite appeal.

In a world focusing on sustainability, however, why use two packages to achieve a single objective? Nestle-France, for example, selected preprinted paperboard as the one container to meet all packaging criteria. That it is cost-effective as well as environmentally effective makes it even sweeter.

Non-round ice cream containers are formed on the PMC-1300 from Paper Machinery Corporation at speeds up to 125 cpm. The updated PMC-1300 model incorporates an additional curl station, another heater station and also runs faster than the original model.

This machine has more versatility to meet the different preferences of ice cream makers for either flat bottoms or recessed bottoms. Some choose flat bottoms to achieve material savings. That is truly the case when the non-round bottom is punched out from a web on the PMC-1300. No freight, no packing materials, and a reduction in indirect labor costs make this in-plant forming approach a compelling choice.

If the containers are to be preformed and nested, ice cream makers select the recessed bottom. Also formed on the PMC-1300, it offers the additional benefit of producing a stronger container with superior compression resistance.

All in all, Nestle-France is serving up a tasty package. It presents a delectable product with eye-appealing graphics, and has the good sense to be sustainable, too. Combining two objectives into one remarkable container is yet another example of the global genius available to you from PMC.
