Convolute plastic packages provide barrier protection and stunning visual impact

Plastic is often the preferred packaging, especially when barrier protection is required. But getting the most out of plastic involves overcoming some barriers, too. Thermoforming, for example, is inexpensive, yet presents printing limitations, which can diminish product sales appeal. Injection molding meets barrier needs and offers a wide size and style range, but is expensive and subject to the same graphics challenges. How ironic that thermoformed and injection molded products turn to preprinted shrink sleeves to enhance their visual impact.

The best of both worlds would be plastic containers with sharp, vibrant graphics. Enter Barrier Plus™ from Paper Machinery Corporation. Introduced six years ago, Barrier Plus technology produces convolute packages from preprinted plastic blanks. Expanding onto another frontier, Orego Ambalaj, a package converter in Istanbul, Turkey, has introduced Barrier Plus for food products. They have made several different container sizes in both clear and opaque PP material. The sidewalls are litho printed and yield outstanding photographic reproduction. Plastic is a smoother surface than paperboard, is less porous, and offers better brightness and gloss. Its advantages make it ideal for dairy products, spreads, fats and other food products.
