MILWAUKEE, WI. – May 4, 2017 – Paper Machinery Corporation is recognized as a global leader in the design and manufacturing of cup and container forming machines. The PMC 1003 machine featured at PMC’s booth in Hall 11/C56 at Interpack 2017 is forming sustainable cups with the fully renewable paperboard, Cupforma Natura by Stora Enso.

“We are excited to form these environmentally friendly cups with our PMC 1003 machine,” stated Scott Eveland, PMC’s Vice President of International Sales. “The PMC 1003 produces paper cups and containers at speeds up to 330 CPM. This allows converters to complete large capacity runs faster with a reduced energy footprint. The PE Green coated Cupforma Natura paperboard we’re using at Interpack is Stora Enso’s newest, most advanced material for sustainable cups.”

The PMC 1003 cup forming machine meets the needs of high-volume paper cup and container converters providing greater efficiency for reduced energy consumption and lower production costs. The PMC 1003 integrates servo and cam technology to reduce inertia for exceptionally fast, efficient production. In addition to speed efficiencies, PMC machines incorporate resource reduction features that minimize oil consumption, electricity and compressed air usage and reduce scrap material waste.

PMC considers renewable cup and container forming a key factor in protecting the environment. PE Green coated Cupforma Natura by Stora Enso is an excellent material choice for sustainable solutions. PE Green coating provides the same high level of protection and functionality as standard polyethylene-coating, but in a fully sustainable form.

Cups made of Cupforma Natura are light, yet highly functional, thanks to the ideal structure of the board: three virgin-fiber, sulphate pulp layers, with the middle layer enhanced with CTMP (Chemi-Thermo-Mechanical Pulp). This structure enables lighter basis weight for the material, which in turn means higher material efficiency. Cupforma Natura is also fully recyclable, which makes it the economical and the ecological choice for hot and cold drinking cups and a wide range of other food packages.

“Sustainability is woven into our long-term corporate strategy,” stated Eveland. “We are continually engineering new features into our machines to reduce energy consumption and identifying effective recyclable materials for cup formation in addition to refitting our facility to reduce our own carbon footprint.”

PMC recognizes that corporate sustainability is not only a better way to treat the environment, but also a better way of doing business. The company is focused on environmental, economical and social sustainability.

ESOP Won’t change Paper Machinery’s Formula

June 21st, 2016

This article originally appeared on Biztimes.com and is posted here by permission.

Luca Dellomodarme, Scott Koehler and Michael Kazmierski don’t expect much to change about Paper Machinery Corp., which was recently turned over to employees in a surprise announcement.

The three were given responsibility for operational control as Donald and John Baumgartner initiated an employee stock ownership plan.

“The risk of failure had been there for 64 years,” said Kazmierski, who was named executive vice president of sales as part of the transition. He acknowledged it is a little more daunting to not have the family to support the company, but said he believes Paper Machinery Corp. is positioned for a bright future.

In the days following the announcement, the company held meetings with employees to explain what it means to be employee-owned. The leadership team met to discuss changes. Among them was a need for more stringent budgeting.

“In the past, as a family-owned company, you spent what you had to spend to get the job done. Now, we need to predict what we will spend. That will be fun,” Kazmierski said with a smile.

But to the outside world, it will appear not much has changed, said Dellomodarme, who was named chief executive officer as part of the transition.

“Our customers keep coming back to us because of the PMC name. The PMC name is built on solid engineering, it’s built on quality, it’s built on service. I don’t think you can separate one from the other,” he said.

Dellomodarme added customers know they are getting a machine that can last 40 years or more.

“To change that formula would be silly,” he said. “There’s no sense in doing that.”

The company’s main products are machines used to form paper cups and other packaging. Customers are suppliers to McDonald’s Corp., Starbucks Corp. and KFC Corp. Kazmierski said about 70 percent of the cost of making cups comes from materials and the balance is labor. The result is that product development has focused on pushing machines to higher and higher speeds.

“The faster the machine can run, the better you can compete in the marketplace,” he said.

Paper Machinery Corp. has been able to increase the speed of its machines by more than 37 percent over the last roughly 20 years. The PMC 1001 model is capable of 240 cups per minute and the newer PMC 1003 produces 330 per minute.

In addition to speed and efficiency, innovation comes in the form of safety. The company’s machines are also used in packaging foods like ice cream. With machines going directly into food processing facilities, Paper Machinery had to adapt the technology to allow users with less knowledge to operate them. That resulted in advances for the cup producers that allowed them to reduce the labor needed to run each machine.

“It was kind of a cross-pollination of the technology,” Kazmierski said.

Other improvements come from Paper Machinery’s technicians. The same employees who build machines also install and service them. Dellomodarme said the technicians’ experiences at the customer facilities are often the genesis of future improvements.

“There’s an intrinsic value to the customer-supplier relationship that they know their mechanics can relate to our mechanics directly,” he said. “A lot of them have friendships with the folks in the field.”

Koehler, the company’s chief financial officer, said the hope is employees will continue to take more ownership now that the ESOP is in place. He said there were already some examples of people taking things more seriously, although he added several had jokingly stopped in his office to tell him to get to work.

Kazmierski, who has been with the company since 1974, said he already felt like PMC had a great work environment before the ESOP was announced.

“Things couldn’t have gotten any better,” he said. “But they did.”

Paper Machinery Corporation Becomes Employee-owned Company – Local company announces ESOP, leadership transition and continued growth in Milwaukee

May 2nd, 2016

Employees-React-to-AnnouncementDonald Baumgartner announced today that Paper Machinery Corporation, initiated an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), making the Milwaukee-based company 100 percent employee owned.

Paper Machinery Corporation has 250 employees in Milwaukee and more than 3,000 installations worldwide. Its machines form paperboard cups and containers for brands like McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks and Tim Hortons.

“This is great news for our employees and great news for Milwaukee,” said Donald Baumgartner, Founder of Paper Machinery Corporation. “The transition to employee ownership will ensure that Paper Machinery Corporation’s legacy will continue right here in Milwaukee for generations to come.”

Changes Ensure Future of Storied Local Company

Paper Machinery Corporation has been advancing forming technology for more than 60 years. The company’s rich history has roots with the Baumgartner family, which has been manufacturing machinery in Milwaukee since 1935.

From building machinery in the family garage to launching such notable Milwaukee manufacturing companies as Reliable Tool and Mercury Engineering, the Baumgartner family is engrained in Milwaukee’s manufacturing history.

Donald Baumgartner got his start working for his father. He went on to follow in his father’s footsteps, founding Paper Machinery Corporation in 1951. Paper Machinery Corporation is now a thriving, international company and remains committed to its Milwaukee roots. Every facet of the company’s engineering, manufacturing and service takes place at the company’s Milwaukee headquarters.

“We are deeply committed to Milwaukee and to our employees,” said Donald Baumgartner. “When the time came to transition ownership – the choice was clear. Who better to carry on our legacy and tradition than the people who made the business successful in the first place – our managers and employees.”

Over the years, Donald Baumgartner had seen too many companies where key employees were laid off after a company sale and the identity of the company was lost. And he had seen his father sell three companies that were later moved out of state. Donald Baumgartner learned his lesson from those experiences and knew that an ESOP was the best succession plan for Paper Machinery Corporation.

The company also remains committed to the family values on which it was founded. “This company is a family business,” said John Baumgartner, Donald’s son and former President of Paper Machinery Corporation, now serving on the company’s Board of Directors. “Our employees are our family, making a transition to an employee-owned company a natural fit.”

Leadership Transition Announced

John-and-Donald-Presenting-to-EmployeesThe ownership announcement is accompanied by a leadership transition. While both Donald Baumgartner, and longtime company president, John Baumgartner, will continue to be significantly invested in Paper Machinery Corporation for many years to come, operational control is being transitioned to longtime managers Luca Dellomodarme, Scott Koehler and Michael Kazmierski. Additionally, Donald Baumgartner will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors, along with John Baumgartner and others, to ensure a successful future for Paper Machinery Corporation, its employees, customers and the broader Milwaukee community.

“Donald and John will continue to provide their significant leadership and vast experience as members of our Board of Directors, and will continue to be a great resource to company leadership,” said Scott Koehler, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Paper Machinery Corporation. “As Luca, Michael and I step into enhanced leadership roles, we will remain committed, more than ever, to the legacy built by the Baumgartner family.”

Luca Dellomodarme joined Paper Machinery Corporation in 2003 and has been named Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining Paper Machinery Corporation, he served in various engineering roles, including as Director of Engineering at International Paper. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and his Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University.

Scott Koehler joined Paper Machinery Corporation in 1992 and currently serves as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. Prior to joining Paper Machinery Corporation, he worked for Ernst & Young and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. He received his Bachelor of Science in Economics and his Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

Michael Kazmierski joined Paper Machinery Corporation in 1974 and currently serves as Senior Vice President – Sales. He started his career as a draftsman and was promoted to Sales Manager in 1986. In 1992, he became Vice President – Sales and Service and was named Senior Vice President – Sales in 2013
